The move across the Hudson is one of the most common we do, and it is almost never the mileage that decides how it goes. It is the building at the other end. University Van Lines has worked both sides of this crossing since 1975, from our own warehouse in Rahway, with our own crews and trucks, fully licensed, accredited and insured.
Most of these moves end in a building with rules: a certificate of insurance on file before anyone is allowed up, an elevator booked for a set block of hours, a service entrance rather than a lobby, and a window that closes whether you are finished or not. We handle the paperwork side before the day and we size the crew to the window rather than to the volume, because on a reserved elevator the clock is the constraint.
Coming the other way, the difficult end is usually the origin: a fifth-floor walk-up, a narrow stair, a street with no legal place to stop a truck, or a building that only releases its elevator between ten and two. We plan the load around that and the delivery is normally the easy half of the day.
In much of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn and Jersey City, where the truck can legally stand is the whole plan. We look at the block before the day, and where a permit is needed we tell you in the estimate rather than on the morning. A long carry from the nearest legal spot is a real cost and we would rather price it honestly than discover it.
Crossing times swing the length of a job more than distance does. We schedule crossings around the peaks in both directions, which usually means an early start on a New Jersey to Manhattan move and a later one coming back.
Closing dates rarely line up across the river. Our Rahway warehouse holds inventoried, vaulted storage between the two, so a gap of a few days or a few months does not need a second move into a self-storage unit.
