The Carolinas have become one of the most common destinations for New Jersey households heading south. Retirees leaving a paid-off house in Union, Essex, Middlesex or Morris County, families following a job to Charlotte or the Research Triangle, and second-home owners setting up on the coast all make the same trip. It is a long enough route that planning matters, and a short enough one that a well-run move goes from a New Jersey driveway to a Carolina front door without changing hands.

North Carolina: Charlotte and the Lake Norman area, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary, Wilmington and the Brunswick County beaches, Asheville and the mountain towns, the Outer Banks, Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

South Carolina: Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Summerville, Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, Hilton Head and Bluffton, Greenville and Spartanburg, Columbia, and the Sun City and Del Webb communities along the coast.

How a New Jersey to Carolinas move works

Survey. Interstate moves are priced from a written inventory, not by the hour. We survey by video call or in person, at your convenience, and count what is actually going.

Written estimate. You receive a written estimate with the scope, the services included and a delivery window before anything is scheduled. Nothing changes on move day unless you add to the shipment.

Packing and loading. Full packing, fragile-only packing, or you pack and we load. Either way, our crew wraps furniture, protects floors and doorways, and inventories every item onto the truck.

Transit and delivery. Your shipment travels in our truck and is delivered inside the window on your estimate. The crew places furniture where you want it, reassembles what we took apart, and removes the packing materials if you asked us to.

Retiring or downsizing to the Carolinas

Many of the moves we run on this route are a couple leaving a four-bedroom colonial for a two-bedroom villa or a single-story home in a 55+ community. Downsizing changes the job. The inventory is smaller than the house suggests, decisions about what stays behind are still being made the week of the move, and there is often a gap between the New Jersey closing and the Carolina move-in.

We are used to all of it. Our senior moving crews are patient with a house that is still being sorted, we can pack a partial household and leave the rest for donation or family, and if the dates do not line up we can hold the shipment in our Rahway warehouse until the new home is ready.

Gated and 55+ communities

A few things to ask your new community before move day, because they affect how we schedule: whether there is a move-in reservation or a time window for trucks, whether the gate needs a vendor name and a truck length in advance, whether a certificate of insurance is required, and whether there are restrictions on where a tractor-trailer can park. Tell us what you learn and we will build it into the plan. If the community limits truck size, we will tell you before the estimate, not on the day.

Timing the trip

The heaviest season for New Jersey to Carolinas moves runs from early fall through the New Year. If you already have a closing date or a lease start, the best thing you can do is get the survey done early and lock the load date. If you are still deciding, a survey costs nothing and gives you a written number to plan around.
