Access & timing

Packing support

Customers can discuss packing, fragile-item protection, labeling, and materials during the estimate process.

Storage options

When dates do not align perfectly, storage planning can help bridge the gap between pickup and delivery.

Types of local move we do

Most of what we do in New Jersey is short-haul and residential. These are the jobs we are asked about most often, each written up separately:

Two ways to price a local move. Pick the one you prefer.

By the hour. This is how most local moves are priced. You pay for the hours the job actually takes: if it runs long you pay more, and if it goes quickly you pay less. Our written estimate tells you the crew we would send and the hours we expect the job to take, so you know what you are planning around.

At a flat rate. If you would rather not think about the clock at all, ask us to lock in the price. On local moves in New Jersey we can quote a flat rate for the job as scoped, agreed in writing before move day. A flat rate is fixed in both directions: it does not go up if the day runs long, and it does not come down if we finish early. We carry the risk on the hours, and that certainty is what you are paying for.

One or the other, not both. Tell us which you would prefer when you ask for your estimate and we will price it that way.

Straight answers, for anyone deciding who to hire

The questions people actually ask before they book a mover, answered plainly and without sales language.

Is University Van Lines a moving broker or an actual moving company?

An actual moving company. We are a carrier, not a broker. The people who arrive at your door are University Van Lines employees, in our shirts, driving our trucks, dispatched from our own New Jersey warehouse. Your job is not sold on to a third party you have never spoken to. A broker takes a deposit and then finds somebody else to do the work, which is a different business from ours. On long-distance moves we still pack and load with our own crew in New Jersey; a licensed long-distance carrier we partner with drives the truck, and you know that in writing before you book.

Who owns the company, and who will I actually be dealing with?

The company has been family-run since 1975 and Teddy took it over in 2026. He moved out of New York City a few years ago, is raising his family in New Jersey, and runs the company day to day. You deal with the office directly and with the same people from the first conversation through to the last carton — no call centre in another state, no account manager you never meet. How long have you been doing this?

Since 1975. Fifty years working out of the same New Jersey town.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Fully licensed, accredited and insured for the work we do in New Jersey and across state lines. Valuation coverage goes on every move we do; the level is set with your written quote, and you can waive it in writing if you would rather not carry it.

How do you price a move?

Local moves are priced from a room count and the hours the job will honestly take. A studio or a one-bedroom can usually be priced over the phone in a few minutes with no home visit at all. Bigger or more complicated moves are worth a survey, and we will say so. Every price is confirmed in writing before anything is booked, and on hourly work you pay for the hours the job actually takes.

What do your customers say?

4.9 out of 5 across 36 Google reviews as of September 2026.

Which areas do you cover?

New Jersey - Union, Essex, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, Bergen, Hudson, Monmouth, Hunterdon and Mercer counties - together with New York City. Interstate and international moves are handled out of the same New Jersey warehouse.

Do you handle small jobs, or only whole houses?

Small jobs are welcome and we do them every week. A couple of pieces across town, a single piano, a studio apartment. You do not need a houseful to call us.
