College and Student Moving in New Jersey and New York

University Van Lines has moved this corridor since 1975. A college move is not a normal move: it happens in the same fortnight as everyone else's, into a building with a reserved elevator and a certificate of insurance on file, and it usually has to be finished before a parent has to drive home. We are family-run, we work out of our own Rahway warehouse with our own crews and trucks, and we are fully licensed, accredited and insured.

Move-out and move-in weeks

The two weeks in May and the two weeks in August are the whole year for student moving, and every building on every campus is trying to do the same thing at once. We book those windows early and we work them in sequence rather than in hope: reserved elevator slots, a set arrival time, and crews sized so a room is cleared inside its window rather than at the end of the day. January transfers and spring-semester room changes are quieter and easier to place at short notice.

Dorm rooms and off-campus apartments

Most student moves are one room, a few boxes, a mattress, a desk chair and a television, going a short distance. That is a job we can price off a room count in minutes without a survey. Larger off-campus houses shared between four or five people are a different job and usually want a walk-through, because the answer depends on stairs, parking and how much is actually going.

Storage between years

A student leaving in May and returning in August does not want to ship everything home and back. We collect at the end of term, inventory it, hold it in our own vaulted warehouse in Rahway over the summer, and deliver it to the new room in August. It is the same storage we use for household and commercial customers, not a self-storage unit you have to visit.

Faculty, staff and departmental moves

A new faculty appointment usually means a household move from another state or another country, sometimes with a laboratory or an office library attached. We handle the household side, the office and departmental side, and the interstate and international legs, and we have done the customs and export packing part of that work for decades. For a department moving buildings, see school and university moving.

Where we work

Students, staff and families move to and from campuses across New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area, and we cover that corridor from Rahway: Union, Middlesex, Essex, Morris, Somerset, Monmouth, Hudson, Bergen and Passaic counties, New York City and Long Island. We also run the interstate and international legs, so a student arriving from another state or another country is the same job to us.

How to start

Tell us the room, the building, the date and the window your campus has given you. A single room usually needs nothing more than that. Anything larger and we will arrange a walk-through. You will get a written estimate from our team.
