School and University Moving in New Jersey

University Van Lines has moved New Jersey and the New York metro area since 1975. Schools are one of the places that history shows: classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, libraries, athletic facilities and administrative offices, moved on an academic calendar rather than a convenient one. We are family-run, work from our own Rahway warehouse with our own crews and trucks, and are fully licensed, accredited and insured.

What we move on a campus

Classrooms and lecture halls - desks, seating, casework, AV carts and teacher materials, kept together by room so a teacher walks into a room that makes sense.
Dormitories and student housing - room-by-room moves, floor clears at the end of a term, and summer consolidation.
Libraries and archives - shelving broken down and rebuilt with collections kept in call-number order.
Laboratories - benches, casework, cabinets and general lab furniture. Regulated, hazardous and live biological materials stay with your licensed specialist; we move everything around them.
Administrative and faculty offices - files, workstations and IT equipment, crated and labelled by owner.
Athletic and facilities departments - equipment rooms, weight rooms, grounds and maintenance stock.

Working to the academic calendar

A school move is defined by the window it has to happen in. Most of ours run in the summer, but the useful ones are often the others: winter recess, spring break, a long holiday weekend, or overnight and weekend phases while the building stays in use. We plan the sequence backwards from the day students and staff return, and we phase the work so no room is out of service longer than it has to be.

The parts that hold projects up

Certificates of insurance. Campus facilities departments and the buildings around them almost always require a COI before anyone works on site, often naming several parties. We produce these as a matter of routine.
Loading dock and elevator windows. Booked in advance and worked to, including buildings that release a dock for only part of a day.
Union and trade rules. Where a campus or building operates under them, we plan around them rather than discovering them on the day.
Background-checked crews. Required where work happens around students. Tell us at the survey stage and we staff accordingly.
Procurement paperwork. Boards of education, municipalities and public institutions have their own quote, bid and vendor requirements. We have supplied them for New Jersey public bodies for years.

Storage between terms

Campus moves rarely go straight from one room to another. Furniture comes out in June and goes back in August; a department leaves a building before the next one is finished. Our Rahway warehouse holds inventoried, vaulted storage in between, so a phased project does not need a swing space on campus.

Who we work with

Public school districts and boards of education, colleges and universities, independent and parochial schools, early-childhood centres, and the facilities and construction managers who run projects on their behalf. We are also the moving contractor behind municipal and county work in New Jersey, which runs on the same procurement rules and the same summer calendar.

Tell us the buildings, the rooms and the window you have to work in. For anything larger than a single office we will arrange a walk-through, because a campus estimate made without seeing the rooms is a guess. You will get a written estimate from our team.
