Long driveways in the Somerset Hills

The Somerset Hills, Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Far Hills and the surrounding area, are defined for a mover by access rather than by volume. Driveways are long, frequently unpaved in part, often steep, and lined with mature trees whose lower branches sit well below the height of a trailer. A tractor-trailer that cannot turn at the top of a drive has to be shuttled from the road in a smaller truck, and that is a decision to make at the estimate, not at the kerb on move day.

The properties themselves tend to be large, with outbuildings, barns and garages that hold a great deal more than anyone remembers. Those buildings are where estimates go wrong, and we would rather walk them than guess.

Further east around Bridgewater and Somerville the picture shifts to ordinary suburban housing and apartment complexes, which are straightforward jobs and quick to book.

What we ask before we quote it

  • Whether a full-size truck can get up the driveway and turn at the top
  • Any outbuildings, barns or detached garages included in the move
  • Overhead clearance, gates and any weight restriction on the drive
  • Whether packing is wanted, and on which day
