Seventy municipalities, seventy sets of rules

Bergen County is made up of around seventy separate municipalities, and that is not a piece of trivia, it is a moving problem. Parking rules, permit requirements and truck restrictions are set locally and vary from one borough to the next, sometimes across a single street. We check the destination town's rules rather than assuming the last one applies.

The housing runs from high-rise condominiums along the Palisades in Fort Lee, where a move means a COI, a booked service lift and a dock window, out to the large properties in Franklin Lakes and Saddle River with long private driveways that a tractor-trailer often cannot turn in. Those two jobs have almost nothing in common except the county line.

Proximity to the George Washington Bridge also means a steady amount of work moving in from Manhattan and the Bronx, which usually means dealing with a building on the New York end as well as a house on the New Jersey one.

What we ask before we quote it

  • Whether the building requires a certificate of insurance or a lift reservation
  • Whether a full-size truck can reach, stand and turn at the property
  • Any local permit needed to park a moving truck
  • Which floors are involved at both ends
