Moving 101: how to get ready for your move

Everything you need to know before move day: what we do, how to get ready, and what we can’t put on the truck. Questions? Call (732) 882-1060.

What we do

The work we take on.

Getting ready

A simple timeline.

Nothing here takes long on its own. Doing each piece when it comes up is what keeps move day quiet.

4–6 weeks out

Book your date. Ask your building(s) about elevator reservations, move-in rules, and whether they need a certificate of insurance (COI). We can send one.

2–3 weeks out

Start packing what you don’t use daily. Sell, donate or toss what you won’t take. Less stuff means a faster, cheaper move.

1 week out

Arrange parking for the truck. Book a licensed pro to disconnect gas appliances or ice-maker lines. Use up or give away the items on the can’t-move list.

1–2 days out

Empty, defrost and dry the fridge and freezer. Drain fuel from mowers and tools. Pack your first-night bag.

Move day

Be there when the crew arrives, walk them through, and point out anything fragile or staying behind. Check every room and closet before we leave.

Packing tips

Pack so nothing shifts.

  • Fill boxes to the top and tape them shut. Half-empty boxes crush.
  • Heavy things in small boxes, light things in big boxes.
  • Label every box with the room and what’s inside. Mark “FRAGILE” where it matters.
  • Empty drawers of anything heavy, breakable or spillable.
  • Bag and label bolts and screws from anything taken apart, and tape the bag to the piece.

Rather not do it? We can pack everything, or just the fragile items.

What we can’t move

For safety and by law, these can’t go on a moving truck:

Gasoline, kerosene, motor oil
Propane tanks (the grill can come, the tank can’t)
Paint, paint thinner, stains
Aerosol cans, lighter fluid, matches
Cleaning chemicals, bleach, pool chemicals
Car batteries, fertilizer, pesticides
Fireworks, ammunition, explosives
Food that can spoil, open containers
Plants (on long-distance moves)
Pets and living things

What we don’t do

  • We don’t disconnect or hook up gas or water lines. Please use a licensed plumber or your utility.
  • We don’t remove anything built into or mounted on the wall: shelves, mirrors, light fixtures, curtain rods. Paintings and photos are fine.
  • We don’t take down TV wall mounts. We’ll take the TV off the mount, but the mount stays.
  • We don’t install or hang anything at your new home: TVs, pictures, shelves or fixtures.

Keep these with you

Cash, jewelry, medications, passports and IDs, important papers, keys, laptops, phones and chargers — and anything you couldn’t replace.

Don’t forget

The things that aren’t about boxes.

  • Change your address with USPS and with your bank, insurance and subscriptions.
  • Set up electric, gas, internet and water at the new place; schedule shut-off at the old one.
  • On move day, keep kids and pets in a safe room or with a sitter.
  • Take photos of anything valuable before the move.

Common questions

Asked on almost every move.

How do I get an estimate?

Call us or fill out the form on our free estimate page. Small local moves — a studio or a one-bedroom — can usually be priced in one quick call, with no visit needed. Bigger moves may need a short walkthrough.

What days do you move?

Monday through Saturday. We don’t run crews on Sundays.

Do you take furniture apart?

Yes. We take apart and put back standard items like bed frames and tables. Tell us about anything unusual when you book.

Can you take down my TV?

Yes, we take the TV off the wall. The wall mount stays, and we don’t hang the TV at your new home.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We’re fully licensed, accredited and insured, and we’ve been moving families since 1975.

Are my things protected?

Valuation coverage is a mover’s liability for your belongings during a move, and it is not the same thing as a homeowners or renters policy. Read the full answer in our FAQ.

Can I pack myself?

Absolutely. Packing well is the easiest way to save time. We can also pack just the fragile items — see packing.

Can you move just one or two items?

Yes — a piano, a safe, a couch across town. Single items are priced on their own.

What if my date changes?

Call us as soon as you know and we’ll work to find you a new date.

Need to move fast?

Call us. Last-minute moves happen, and we’ll tell you quickly what’s possible. More on last-minute moves.

Should I tip the crew?

It’s never required, but always appreciated.

What if something gets damaged?

Tell the crew lead before they leave, or call the office right away, and we’ll make it right.
